The Latest Skincare Trend

It’s no secret that skincare trends, have seen their fair share of unique ideas, and amazing results. It’s likely you have even tried one of the hot and trendy skincare products yourself. The question is just how many of those skincare trends were you aware of what the actual ingredients were, that you were using? Often times we find ourselves jumping on the latest brand craze without investigating what we are using, the benefits, or where the trend even originated. The latest trend to hit the market is SNAIL MUSIN. I’m sure you are currently having a moment of, wait what did I just read, what part of the snail is the Musin and why do I want it in my skincare? To answer that let’s jump into a little science and history lesson.

Snail Musin as you may have guessed by now, is in fact that slimey trail you see a snail leave behind. Why would you want that on your skin? Snail Musin is in fact has been found to be rich in hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, antimicrobial and copper peptides, and proteoglycans. Snails themselves actually use this mucus they secrete, to protect themselves from cuts and scrapes as they glide over surfaces. In ancient Greece, the famous Hippocrates was reported to have prescribed crushed snail shells in an ointment to treat inflammation. Snails can be found woven all through history as being used to treat various skin concerns and issues. In 1700’s France it can be found to have been used in a solution to treat skin redness and illnesses. Snails can be found being widely used again in the 1800’s and 1900’s to treat skin illnesses, such as measles, scarlet fever and small pox among other things all the way up until the 1980’s. Snail Musin a.k.a Snail Slime began to make a comeback again in the early 2000’s when it began to appear in K-Beauty skincare products reporting the ingredient would smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

A lot of trends come and go over the years, after they are debunked as false claims. However it is hard to debunk a trend, when history has proven over and over again the benefits of using Snail Musin for skincare. In fact this “magic” slime has become so popular that there are now farms snail farms. Hyaluronic acid we know is already in many high end beauty products because it helps in the anti-aging process as it hydrates the skin and has been shown to reduce scaring. Knowing now that the same ingredient is found in a more organic state, is part of why Snail Slime has become the latest must-have ingredient in beauty products. As the slime has gained popularity, the cost of getting it in your own skincare has dramatically became cheaper, then some of other sought after ingredients, that offer the same results. It’s a no brainer for me to choose a product that not only costs less, but whose benefits come from a more natural derived source.
